Last week I had the pleasure of attending a photo styling workshop at Debbie Lilly's DL Loft in the Lakeview neighborhood. Half the battle of taking a good photo is styling your shot. This can also be the most time consuming part, so it was nice to set some time aside to dedicate to practicing my styling skills! Lots of local Chicago businesses offered up their products for us to arrange and shoot which made for an wide array of products to photograph. I took some photos that I could not wait to share with all of you!
Here are a few product photography staging things that I learned while sipping cocktails and snapping photos:
Photo Tip #1: Rule of Thirds
An image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally space horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines, and important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections.
Photo Tip #2: Point of View
Point of view in photography refers to the angle or place from which you shoot. It can also refer to which part of your subject is in focus. We moved around and played with different angles!
Photo Tip #3: Negative Space
Negative space is the area which surrounds the main subject in your photo. It defines and emphasises the main subject of a photo, drawing your eye to it. It provides "breathing room", giving your eye somewhere to rest!
